Responsibilities
- Define the technical vision and roadmap for package management and system lifecycle technologies
- Lead and develop a team of experienced engineers through coaching and performance management
- Guide architecture reviews and technical decisions across software management, updates, drivers, firmware, and related infrastructure
- Plan delivery across release cycles while balancing innovation, compatibility, stability, and sustainability
- Improve performance, reliability, security, test automation, release quality, and maintainability
- Partner with product, security, desktop, server, OEM, and release engineering teams
- Collaborate with Debian, upstream projects, and the wider open source community
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, STEM, or equivalent professional experience
- Strong professional experience in software engineering, system design, and complex technical platforms
- Proven experience leading engineering teams through people management, coaching, mentoring, and performance development
- Experience with Linux distribution technologies, package management systems, or software distribution infrastructure
- Strong understanding of systems software and operating system architecture
- Understanding of release engineering across multiple release cycles
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Willingness to travel internationally approximately twice per year for events of up to two weeks
Nice to have
- Experience contributing to Debian, Ubuntu, or other open source infrastructure projects
- Familiarity with package repositories, archives, and package lifecycle technologies
- Background in performance, reliability, or security engineering
