3D Art Lead

An independent game studio is seeking a 3D Art Lead for a dark fantasy action RPG in the prototype stage. The role will establish the 3D pipeline, coordinate artists, and help create and integrate game assets in Unreal Engine 5. Collaboration terms and compensation are discussed individually.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the 3D visual style with the art director and team.
  • Build and maintain the 3D pipeline, from asset preparation through Unreal Engine 5 integration.
  • Plan, break down, and assign tasks among 3D artists.
  • Review models, textures, and materials for quality and consistency with the project style.
  • Contribute to key environment, prop, character, and creature assets.
  • Prepare and integrate assets in Unreal Engine 5.
  • Monitor model, UV, LOD, collision, and performance optimization.
  • Coordinate with game designers, programmers, and level designers.
  • Maintain clear documentation of 3D processes and asset requirements.

Requirements

  • Strong experience creating 3D assets for games.
  • Proficiency with Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, or similar software.
  • Confident use of Substance 3D Painter, Substance 3D Designer, or similar tools.
  • Understanding of the complete game 3D pipeline, including modeling, UVs, baking, texturing, materials, optimization, and export.
  • Experience integrating assets into Unreal Engine 5.
  • Understanding of PBR, modular environments, LODs, and optimization.
  • Ability to organize work, provide feedback, and maintain consistent quality.
  • Attention to detail and a good sense of form, scale, and atmosphere.
  • Interest in RPGs, action games, and dark fantasy.

Nice to have

  • Previous experience as a 3D Lead, Lead Artist, or Senior 3D Artist.
  • Experience creating game environments, modular location kits, characters, weapons, armor, or creatures.
  • Familiarity with ZBrush, Marvelous Designer, SpeedTree, or Houdini.
  • Understanding of lighting, composition, and scene staging in Unreal Engine 5.
  • Contributions to commercial or completed game projects.
