Senior Computer Vision and Machine Learning Engineer (Volunteer)
Contribute to a coral research and monitoring project by developing and evaluating AI methods for underwater imagery. Flexible commitment of approximately 1–4 hours per week.
Responsibilities
- Work with real-world underwater image datasets
- Select and evaluate pretrained computer vision models
- Generate and analyze image embeddings
- Develop image similarity, retrieval, classification, and clustering approaches
- Evaluate models, analyze errors, and improve performance
- Support technical decisions on methodology and model selection
- Collaborate with engineers, researchers, and environmental-domain experts
Requirements
- At least 3 years of hands-on computer vision or machine learning experience, or equivalent significant practical experience
- Strong Python skills
- Practical experience with PyTorch, TensorFlow, or another deep-learning framework
- Experience working with pretrained computer vision models
- Experience with embeddings, feature extraction, or representation learning
- Strong understanding of classification, train/validation/test methodology, confusion matrices, precision, recall, F1 score, overfitting, and generalization
- Ability to independently analyze model performance, debug issues, and propose improvements
- Experience with real-world datasets beyond coursework
Nice to have
- Experience with fine-tuning, transfer learning, image similarity, clustering, image retrieval, segmentation, or object detection
- Experience with OpenCV, scikit-learn, Hugging Face, CLIP, DINO, ViT, or similar tools and models
- Experience with noisy, imbalanced, or imperfect datasets
- Background or interest in marine biology, ecology, conservation, or environmental technology
