Freelance Japanese Game Localization Lead
Join a freelance pool supporting ongoing and upcoming game localization projects. Work remotely on a flexible, project-based basis, with payment based on an agreed hourly rate and completed assignments. Responsibilities
- Assess game translators, editors, and LQA linguists
- Create translation tests and scoring criteria
- Review localized content for quality, consistency, tone, and cultural appropriateness
- Recommend cultural adaptations for Japanese-market text, names, visuals, lore, and player-facing content
- Serve as a linguistic escalation point and final reviewer for assigned projects
- Maintain style guides, glossaries, error catalogues, and training materials
- Give structured feedback and guidance to linguists
- Support in-context LQA and investigate linguistic issues as needed
- Collaborate with project managers and linguists to resolve language and cultural issues
Requirements
- Native-level Japanese and excellent English proficiency
- At least 7 years of professional game localization experience in translation, editing, linguistic QA, or lead roles
- Experience with game localization across multiple genres
- Strong knowledge of Japanese gaming culture and culturalization for the Japanese market
- Experience assessing translators, editors, or LQA linguists and giving actionable feedback
- Knowledge of game localization workflows, linguistic QA, terminology management, and style-guide compliance
- Proficiency with CAT and QA tools such as Trados, memoQ, or Xbench, or similar
- Ability to identify linguistic, cultural, and contextual issues and recommend solutions
Nice to have
- Experience creating style guides, glossaries, training materials, or error catalogues
- Experience mentoring linguists or leading localization teams
- Experience with AI- or machine-translation-assisted workflows
- Experience with in-context review and game LQA
