Senior Acoustic Signal Processing Engineer
Develop acoustic signal-processing methods and applications for underwater sensing systems, from optical signal demodulation through detection and analysis. Work across algorithms, optical front-end characterization, experiments, and field deployments.
Responsibilities
- Develop algorithms to extract acoustic signals from distributed fiber phase data and improve signal-to-noise ratio.
- Build robust demodulation and phase-unwrapping methods; model noise and apply spatial and temporal filtering.
- Characterize coherent optical interrogation, phase noise, interferometric demodulation, and system noise sources.
- Define optical-system requirements for noise floor, dynamic range, sampling rate, and bandwidth; validate performance on an optical bench.
- Develop detection, localization, and classification algorithms for acoustic events and targets.
- Apply machine-learning and statistical methods to large acoustic datasets; define performance measures and validate against ground truth.
- Design and run controlled pool and field experiments, and establish validation protocols.
- Lead signal-processing work during field deployments, including acquisition setup, data-quality monitoring, and post-analysis.
- Document algorithms and results, lead technical reviews, and coordinate design decisions with sensor-interface and technical teams.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in electrical engineering, acoustics, physics, applied mathematics, or a related field.
- At least 7 years of acoustic signal-processing experience.
- Experience with underwater sensing technologies and applications.
- Strong digital signal-processing skills, including filtering, spectral analysis, statistical estimation, and array processing.
- Hands-on algorithm development using Python with NumPy and SciPy, and/or MATLAB.
- Experience with data-acquisition systems and real-time or near-real-time signal analysis, including sensor integration and calibration.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Nice to have
- PhD in signal processing or acoustics.
- Experience with fiber-optic sensing, including DAS, interferometry, or phase-OTDR.
- Experience with coherent optical detection, phase demodulation, and phase unwrapping.
- Experience with sonar or acoustic sensor systems.
- Machine learning experience with time-series or acoustic data.
- Experience designing field or pool experiments and processing field datasets.
