Building Inspector
A municipal government seeks a Building Inspector to oversee construction, verify compliance with permits and regulations, execute site visits, compile reports, and deliver planning and building services to the public.
Responsibilities
- Conduct site tours and visits at various construction stages to ensure alignment with approved plans and permits.
- Prepare professional opinions on building permit applications and review requests for water and electricity meter approvals.
- Compile inspection reports, document construction status, and maintain data in computerized systems.
- Handle start-of-work approvals and perform proactive field inspections.
- Issue and monitor orders, and assist enforcement agencies in evidence collection.
- Provide testimony in court on matters within the area of responsibility.
- Collect field data, carry out building and usage surveys, analyze data, and draft position papers.
- Deliver service to residents on planning and building issues, including handling public complaints, reception, and inquiries.
- Produce inspection reports and engineering opinions for declaring dangerous structures, and manage cases per municipal bylaw.
- Address light construction and hazardous materials construction in accordance with law and regulations.
Requirements
- Academic degree in Civil Engineering or Architecture with registration in the Engineers and Architects Register, or a master's degree with a specialization in Urban Planning; alternatively, a registered engineer or certified technician in the same fields.
- Familiarity with planning and building laws and regulations, Office applications, and GIS systems.
- Good health and physical fitness.
- Willingness to perform fieldwork and frequent travel.
- Ability to work under pressure and negotiate with contractors, architects, and citizens.
- Personal reliability, strong interpersonal skills, high service orientation, and teamwork capability.
- Excellent written and verbal expression in Hebrew; additional languages are an advantage.
- Willingness to work irregular hours and wear a uniform as required by law.
- Valid driver's license; the role involves driving a municipal vehicle.
