Head of Firmware
Take full ownership of embedded software for wireless modular automation controllers. Define technical roadmap, modernize codebase, and establish engineering standards for device lifecycle from development to field diagnostics.
Responsibilities
- Own ESP32 / FreeRTOS codebase, including staged modernization with automated test suite
- Develop and maintain device connectivity: WiFi, TCP/IP, MQTT/HTTP, and peer-to-peer communication
- Design and operate safe, recoverable FOTA update pipeline for remote devices
- Integrate sensors and actuators over I2C, SPI, UART, and RS485
- Build automated test equipment for production and regression testing
- Establish release engineering practices: versioning, CI, branching, diagnostics, documentation
- Recruit and lead firmware team as company grows
Requirements
- 7+ years embedded C/C++ development on microcontrollers with production firmware
- Production experience with ESP32 or comparable WiFi SoC
- FreeRTOS in production: tasks, queues, timers, debugging race conditions
- Strong networking: TCP/IP, WiFi reliability, OTA updates on deployed fleets
- Hardware proficiency: I2C, SPI, UART, RS485; oscilloscopes, logic analyzers
- Experience building automated tests or ATE for embedded systems
- Ability to own product area end-to-end without technical management
Nice to have
- ESP-IDF beyond Arduino framework; PlatformIO
- Modbus RTU over RS485
- ESP-NOW, WiFi mesh, or other peer-to-peer protocols
- Manufacturing test experience: jigs, fixtures, end-of-line testers
- Hardware bring-up and ECO collaboration with electrical engineering
- Experience in agricultural, industrial, or harsh-environment IoT
