Lead the adoption of a semantic abstraction layer by bridging ontology expertise with operational reality. You will train platform teams, guide LoBs in authoring canonical domain models, and evangelize the business value of semantic technologies. This role is ideal for a hands-on ontology practitioner who can translate complex domain knowledge into formal models and build capability across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Train platform architects and engineers on semantic modeling fundamentals including OWL, RDF/S, graph databases, and ontology design patterns.
  • Guide the engineering team on correct implementation of the ontology management service to align technical decisions with business intent.
  • Establish semantic standards such as naming conventions, annotation requirements, and foundational ontology alignment patterns.
  • Work directly with LoB subject matter experts and data modelers to author their first canonical domain models through hands-on collaboration.
  • Conduct structured working sessions to translate domain knowledge into formal model design decisions.
  • Build LoB confidence and autonomy progressively, transitioning from doing to coaching to advising.
  • Develop reusable guidance materials including modeling guides, worked examples, and decision frameworks.
  • Articulate the business value of the semantic layer to stakeholders in terms of findability, interoperability, IP protection, and reduced integration cost.
  • Demonstrate tangible outcomes such as faster application development and clearer data product descriptions.
  • Address skepticism directly, acknowledging overhead while explaining where the investment pays back.
  • Act as expert reviewer in the publication gate, reviewing submitted models for structural quality and interoperability readiness.
  • Define quality standards for canonical domain models and identify modeling anti-patterns early.

Requirements

  • Hands-on ontology development experience in industrial or enterprise settings, not purely academic.
  • Practitioner-level fluency in OWL, RDF/S, SKOS, and SPARQL.
  • Experience operating open-standards graph databases including configuration, data loading, querying, and performance considerations.
  • Proven ability to translate complex domain knowledge from subject-matter experts into formal semantic models.
  • Experience introducing semantic technologies to teams with no prior exposure, with evidence of successful adoption.
  • Ability to explain semantic modeling concepts to non-technical audiences without jargon.
  • Comfortable extracting coherent domain models from specialists such as control engineers or grid specialists.
  • Patience, pragmatism, and clarity when working in an environment where the technology is new to everyone.
  • Strong opinions on modeling quality, loosely held when confronted with practical constraints.
  • Excellent written communication skills to produce clear, usable guidance documents.
  • Straightforward oral communication style, comfortable in multi-cultural environments.
